When most carpets look the same, how do you know you're choosing a quality carpet? Apart from the different quality fibre types such as wool or nylon, the best indicator lies in the carpet "density".
Very simply, density means how many tufts of yarn there are in a given area of the carpet.
So here's a simple test, separate (part) the tufts of the carpet pile and look how close the rows are. The tighter the carpet pile and the less backing you see means greater density, better durability and quality.
Tufts that are close together will not flatten as easily and will keep liquid spills and soil particles nearer the surface for easier cleaning. Plus a densely tufted carpet will not wear out as quickly, will show less footprints and vacuum cleaner marks than a thinner one.
The bottom line is that a high-density carpet retains its looks and feel longer providing many years of added value.
Nylon
Nylon is the most popular synthetic made fibre today and when treated for stain resistance, anti-static and anti-soil it performs exceptionally well as a carpet. Download nylon brochure
Wool
Because it's natural fibre, wool is unparalleled for its quality and beauty. Warm in winter, cool in summer, wool carpets resist absorbing spills, are resilient, have a timeless appearance and will "age gracefully". Download wool brochure
Wool Blend
Wool and synthetic fibre blend so successfully it's impossible to differentiate between the two. The end result is a range of quality carpets with enhanced stain resistance which, are less expensive than wool.
Polypropylene
The "die-hard" of carpets. For value, practicality and good looks it's hard to go past Polypropylene, that's what makes it a great alternative for rental or investment properties. Download polypropylene brochure
Solution Dyed
Because the Solution Dyed technology locks the colour into the very core of every fibre it means superior stain resistance, extra durability and good looks that last. Download solution dyed brochure
Your underlay can be either rubber or foam however the most important decision you can make is the level of quality.
A better quality foam or rubber underlay will provide increased cushioning, last longer and offer better support for the life of your carpet. It will also provide improved sound, heat and cold insulation, all for a relatively small cost.
If your existing underlay is only 2 or 3 years old, it can be reused. However we don't recommend this, as there will be some degree of deterioration, particularly in the high traffic areas.
There is also felt underlay, which is recommended for woven carpets.
Choices recommends underlay manufactured by Dunlop and Airstep.
