Before I had kids and needed the extra space that goes with them, I lived in some shoeboxes, believe me. Places so tiny you sort of hunched because the walls were closing in. And so I developed a philosophy – sort of the roomy equivalent of looking at a glass as half full, instead of half empty. The important thing was not to fret about how little space I may have had; it was to concentrate on maximising the space I did have. So, you live in a smallish place … big deal. Let’s make it amazing. Your choice of colour will have a big effect on the area you’re working with. Choosing a similar colour for both your walls and floor will make the space appear more expansive. Lighter, cooler colours can make a room seem larger and more airy, while darker, warmer tones add warmth and a sense of intimacy. Your small bedroom can be made wonderfully cosy with the addition of dark, plush carpet. However, a dark coloured floor will absorb light, so if the room is dim it’s best to opt for a lighter shade.
