With a new year almost upon us, it may be time to embrace change and explore new directions in colour writes Kylie Jackes
These days as our homes increasingly become a sanctuary, where we retreat and relax, colour plays a big role in setting the tone for not only a stunning interior but also how we feel. As we look to the year ahead, the major paint companies have released a host of stunning palettes designed to provide a counter balance for our digitally focused senses and take us back to nature, with dreamy hues and textures.
Think pared back simplicity which will create harmony in living spaces guided by your own sensibilities, whether it may be subtle soft pastels or deep earthy hues. While introducing decorative pieces and accents can provide a quick colour update, for incredible impact nothing beats updating an entire room or refreshing major surfaces such as flooring and walls throughout. And when it comes to selecting a new palette it’s always best to choose finishes in reference to one-another to ensure they complement each other perfectly. Here’s four trends we’ll be following in 2017 and beyond.
Rather than bland neutrals, take a fresh approach with soothing, restorative tonal shades such as dusty pinks, fawn, muted lime and soft greys, inspired by natural materials such as clay, minerals, stone and wood. Enhance the textural look with suede effect paint on the walls and for a tactile look and feel underfoot consider beautiful timber flooring such Plantino Engineered Oak Corsican Grey or St Moritz, and draw inspiration from woven macramé hangings and crochet by adding the natural beauty of wool throughout with a loop-pile carpet like Levante Parchment.
Rich and Earthy
For a global feel perfectly at home in an eclectic interior, look to colours such as burnished reds, clay, muted burgundys, browns and orange, paired with contrasting accents like bright yellow or blue. This look works well anchored in living areas with a dark floor such as Quick-Step Readyfloor Merbau Low Sheen or Eco Walk Ironbark, while Levante, Gold Charm Wool – Loop carpet will add understated luxury and warmth in the bedroom.
Into the Blue
Deep blues and greens are set to be big in 2017. Whether it be deep arctic hues or earthy greens, subtle undertones create a look which is calm and sophisticated. Cooler shades work beautifully alongside tiles like Eclipse Zenith – Bone Ideal, Concrete White or can be warmed up a little with lighter toned timber flooring such as Plantino Bamboo in Straw or Embelton Bamboo Snow Limed Smooth Finish. For added textural appeal, complete the look with lush potted greenery and cascading hanging baskets.
For added luxury and industrial appeal, new paint ranges also emulate the look of stone, concrete, copper and suede. Think bold steely greys and inky blues to accentuate interior details and complement sleek architectural lines. Reflect the minimalist feel with sleek flooring like Eclipse Zenith – Sardinia, Grigio for a chic utilitarian feel, or the marble look of Eclipse Lunar – MML Vivo, White.
