When it comes to cleaning spills on your timber floors the old adage of ‘less is more’ definitely rings true. Whether it’s timber, vinyl or laminate flooring you’re cleaning you don’t need too much water to get the job done, in fact too much water can do more harm than good.
Firstly, make sure you blot any spills with a paper towel or micro-fibre cloth to get up as much of the liquid as possible. The trick is to get to spills as quickly as you can so the liquid doesn’t seep into the floors and make them sticky or water damaged. Next you just need to mop the floors with warm water and a gentle cleaner. I bought my floor cleaner from a Choices Flooring store so I knew it was the recommended product for timber floors I bought there, which gave me peace of mind. You only need to use a tiny cap full in a bucket of water too, so don’t overdo it.
The great thing about timber, vinyl and laminate flooring is how easy they are to clean when it comes to spills, so there’s really no sauce or liquid you need to be too worried about as long as you get to it quickly. However, when it comes to carpets you do need to be a bit more careful and a spilt bowl of Bolognese sauce on a carpet floor would certainly elevate my heart rate a little. But if the dreaded spill does happen, don’t panic! Just act quickly and follow these steps:
- Blot the spill with a micro-fibre cloth to get out as much liquid as possible. DON’T RUB, just gently blot.
- Pour soda water on the stain it to prevent it from seeping into the fibres.
- Make a baking soda paste by mixing three parts water to one part baking soda and apply to the affected area.
- Once the paste is dry, vacuum the stain.
If you follow this method hopefully you can avoid a visit from the steam cleaner, however if the stain does set in you are always best to get it steam cleaned as soon as possible.
You can also avoid the panic about spills and stains by investing in a carpet that’s easy to clean and the Serenity Collection from Choices Flooring is your perfect choice for that. The Serenity Eden carpet has permanent built-in stain and soil protection that won’t wear or wash off and its specifically engineered fibres repel dirt and spills, so they don’t turn into stains. So it’s the perfect option if you have pets or kids. Because life, and the occasional spill, happens!
