Eclectic Decorating Tips

Featured Image

Eclectic styling.  It’s one of those styles that looks like a mish mash of random items thrown together, but it is definitely not for the faint hearted. If you’ve ever attempted eclectic decorating, you’ll know that it is not as easy as it seems. In fact, finding the perfect mix of décor takes a lot of planning, and a good eye and (wait for it)….Patience. Yep, this eclectic decorating thing is best achieved turtle style: slow and steady. So if you’ve fallen in love with this style as much as I have, here are a few things you’ll need to consider before you hit the shops and thrift stores for your treasures.

Plan your room

Planning the layout of your room gives you an idea of what the focal point of the room will be.  It could be a feature wall, shelves, or even a large sideboard. Whatever it is, you want to build around that particular space to compliment it and make it shine. Have a vision and a direction for what you want the space to look like, and how it will feel. Think about your colours, textures, lighting, and most importantly – the actual purpose of the room.

Add depth and character

Eclectic style isn’t all about picture gallery walls. This is your chance to think outside the box! Baskets and blankets can become wall décor, or display items that you love that you would usually keep tucked away. Layer or stack items on shelves, and use statement wall pieces (big or small) to give your space depth and character. You want the eye to be drawn through an adventure of beautiful, interesting and meaningful pieces.

Use what you love

Take your time to build your room! You may be tempted to knock it over in a weekend, but unless you’ve been planning and sourcing stuff for months, it could be an expensive mistake to rush it. Start with key pieces that you know will work. You know these pieces – they’re the ones you can’t stop thinking about, the ones you’ve added to your cart so many times that even your computer wants you to hit checkout. Once you’ve established what these pieces are, collecting and sourcing blankets, cushions, art and décor will become much easier! Plus you’ll save money in the long run by mixing and matching items that you already have. If your key players are already residents in your home, then you’re on your way. Keep an eye on second hand websites for unique one-off pieces. Tip shops, thrift shops and garage sales are also great places to find treasures that will make a point of difference.

Step back and look at your plan

When you add items to the room, step back and look around. The room should feel balanced and welcoming. If it looks like a bunch of 3 year olds got into a storage facility and randomly placed stuff around your home, then you might want to tone it down a notch or two. Just saying. Another good way to see how it looks is to take a photo. Stepping away from the room and looking at it from a different perspective and with fresh eyes will help you to see what it may need next.

Remember, eclectic isn’t disorganised. It’s one of those “perfectly imperfect” styles that can be tricky – BUT, as a rule of thumb: if you love it, make it work for you!

Good luck!
