Step 2: Select your prefered colour tone

When it comes to carpet, you are spoilt for colour choice. The range is amazing and extensive which makes choosing just one all the more difficult. Before you start, it’s a good idea to sit in the room you’re carpeting and think about how colour will work there.

For instance, you may want to choose a carpet that complements your furnishings, or one that works well with your paint or wallpaper colours. In some cases, you may even want the carpet to become the main feature of the room.

Here are some tips to help you choose colour with confidence:

  • Deep, rich colours warm up a space and encourage conversation
  • Cool crisp colours create freshness and space and promote relaxation
  • Subdued colours or earth tones create a quieter mood
  • Brighter colours have an energising effect
  • Light colours open up a dark room creating a spacious, airy effect
  • Bold colours and patterns are ideal to take the focus off furnishings
  • Neutral colours shift the focus from flooring to furnishings
  • Light colours soil easily, dark colours may lint, and medium colours are easier to clean

Step 3: Consider your investment

Many people have a budget in mind for their flooring project, whether it’s part of a full home renovation or just one or two rooms.

As a general rule, pricing for flooring is displayed or quoted in square metres.

Some carpet pricing includes installation, whereas hard flooring surfaces do not. If you know the number of square metres required to carpet your home and you have selected a style, you can then determine the cost.

For Example: 75m2 at $50/sqm = $3,750

Step 4: Determine the amount of flooring you will need

product-page-arrows

The amount of carpet you will need is determined by the size and number of rooms you’re carpeting. The following provides a guideline for the approximate number of square metres required to carpet these average room types:

Master Bedroom 5 lm = 18 sqm Lounge 5 lm = 18 sqm Family Room 5 lm = 18 sqm
Kids Bedroom 4 lm = 15 sqm Dining 4 lm = 15 sqm
Bedroom / Study 3 lm = 11 sqm Kitchen 4 lm = 15 sqm

*These measures are based on average room sizes only and will vary from home to home.

Step 5: Think about what you need from your carpet

product-page-cloud

So many factors will determine your choice of carpet. From a home interior design angle, you’ll need to consider the style and colour that will best suit your home. Are you after a traditional, contemporary or eclectic look? Some carpets lend themselves better to different style outcomes.

On a practical level you may also need to consider what benefits you need from your carpet.

Do you have a busy household?

If so, you’ll need a carpet that can handle high traffic areas.

Do you regularly use a fireplace?

Then a fire resistant carpet is a must.

Do you have indoor pets?

Apart from a durable carpet, you’ll need a carpet that can maintain traffic from feet as well as paws (with claws), which may rule out a loop carpet.

Does sunlight spill through your main living area during the day?

Then a solution dyed nylon carpet would be suitable to reduce colour fading.

Do you have children or a rental property?

Choosing a durable fibre will be essential.

While it sounds like a lot, if you take the time now to consider your lifestyle factors and how you need your carpet to perform, the selection process will go smoothly and the result will be just as you anticipated.

Step 6: What style do you like?

Twist

A twist pile carpet is made from yarn that has been tightly twisted and set to form a pile with a slightly textured surface. Twist carpets are a relatively ‘safe’, mainstream style to go with if you’re not looking for a patterned or textured design. Twist carpets can also be a great ‘base’ carpet upon which to build in other interior design elements.

Features

  • Durable and long lasting
  • Comfortable and soft
  • Hardly shows watermarking or shading
  • Perfect for family homes or households with pets

Plush

Plush pile is the ultimate in luxurious looking carpet. With a velvety appearance that brings texture and tonal variances to the floor, plush is a truly elegant carpet style that requires care and maintenance to maintain its as-new appearance for years to come.

Features

  • Luxurious and beautiful appearance
  • Perfect for a formal environment
  • Comfortable
  • Resilient

Loop

A loop carpet is comprised of looped fibre all measuring the same height, which creates a flat, smooth surface. Loop carpets, or Berber as they used to be called, have experienced a resurgence in popularity among contemporary styled houses and bring a little more dimension and style to the floor.

Features

  • High abrasion resistance
  • Rarely pills or shreds
  • Excellent stain resistance and hides soiling well
  • Easy to maintain

Textured

Textured carpets have a twisted yarn that is cut to create a textured or patterned surface, which helps mask footprints. Perfect for high-traffic zones and casual areas, the versatility of this carpet makes it a popular and contemporary choice.

Features

  • High abrasion resistance
  • Rarely pills or shreds
  • Excellent stain resistance and hides soiling well
  • Wide range of colours and fibres

Measurements explained.

Carpet can only be bought by the lineal/broadloom metre, which is generally 3.66 or 4 metres wide. However as timber, laminate, bamboo, vinyl and tiles are only sold by the square metre, carpet prices are converted to square metres so an easy comparison can be made between these flooring options.

Pricing in store.

Choices Flooring stores generally price in square metres, however some stores may also include the lineal metre price. Carpets are usually priced as “fully installed” which includes the cost of installation and underlay.

Note – Laid prices don’t usually include extras such as moving furniture, disposing of old flooring, floor preparation work, and borders and stair accessories.

No. All carpets, except woven carpets, are made with spaces between the tufts (ends). Remember, except when used on stairs, carpet is laid flat on the floor. You can feel the thickness or density of different carpets by sticking your fingers into the pile, but make sure you do it on a flat surface. As a general rule, thicker, tighter, denser carpets perform better.
Using technical specifications of a product can give you a guide, but there are many other factors that can alter the comparison. For example, two carpets made to the same specifications but made with different fibres will perform, look, and feel differently in the same environment.
A rating system developed by a manufacturer is their own evaluation of products based on their set of standards and “testing” methods. These rating systems can’t be compared across manufacturers since most are based on opinion and not strict testing methods.
Twist is the number of turns put into the carpet fibre or yarn. Almost all carpets have twisted yarns. As a general rule, the more twist or turns on a fibre, the better performance you can expect. Yarns that are twisted tighter have a different feel compared to those that are looser.
There are various qualities of wool and nylon carpets available across a range of price points.
A plush pile carpet is very luxurious and comfortable to live with. A twist pile carpet has the added benefit of minimising the appearance of tracking or foot marking. We recommend that you select products depending on your lifestyle and the foot traffic in your home.
A broadloom metre is actually 3.66 square metres, i.e. 1 metre cut from a carpet roll, which is normally 3.66 metres in width. It’s always a good idea to compare the square metre cost of carpet against other floor coverings such as ceramic tiles, vinyl or timber as they are specifically priced by the square metre and you can determine a better comparison of value.
Shedding results from the type of fibre used in the manufacturing of the carpet. Carpet that is manufactured with staple fibre has shorter fibres in the yarn and will shed for a short time depending on the amount of foot traffic and how often you vacuum. BCF, or Bulked Continuous Fibre, is the other type of fibre used in the manufacturing of carpet. In terms of durability there is little difference between the two. Wool is naturally a staple fibre; nylon and polyester can be either staple or BCF and olefin is usually BCF.
A plush carpet with its velvet appearance would be the perfect carpet style to achieve your formal look. A patterned carpet can also add additional style to a formal room.
While many people commonly refer to loop style carpets as Berber, the term Berber actually means a flecking of colour that originates from the natural flecking found in wool.
Anti-static technology is built into the carpet itself to ensure a static-free environment.
No it doesn’t. Spot cleaning is recommended because a stain is harder to remove if allowed to dry—don’t rub into the carpet, rather use pressure to soak up the liquid as soon as you notice a spill. While nylon carpet is treated with stain resistance, it’s still recommended to clean up spills as quickly as possible—again, don’t rub into the carpet, rather use pressure to soak up the liquid.
Wool is a natural fibre and is great for insulation, i.e. it keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer.  Recommended if you have an open fireplace.   Nylon is a man-made fibre that can be solution dyed, i.e. the colour is right through the fibre like a carrot, or just nylon i.e. colour coats the outside of the fibre like an apple
