How flooring is working to reduce our footprint

Featured Image
We partner with many businesses that have sustainability and the environment at the core of their manufacturing process. Whether it be recycling or the commitment to reforestation, Choices Flooring ensures that as a retailer we align ourselves with those that are environmentally aware whilst not compromising on producing the latest in designs.

Here are some of the ways we are working to reduce our footprint.

Campaign for Wool

Among its many benefits, at the end of its useful life, the pile from wool carpet can be returned to the ground, where the nutrients released as it decomposes promote further grass growth and the natural production cycle starts all over again. Wool carpet that has natural backing material is 100% biodegradable.

The Campaign for Wool is a global endeavor initiated by its patron, His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales. Its mission is to raise awareness among consumers about the unique, natural and sustainable benefits offered by wool.

The combined efforts of the leading wool organisations, industry associations and the textile industry across the world has created a campaign to promote the wonderful properties that wool offers to textiles and in doing so, help support sheep farming as an industry and the textile community internationally.

By selecting a wool carpet from our exclusive Temuka or Windsor Wool ranges, you too can join in the campaign and live naturally.

The Quiet Achiever

Dunlop Comfort CHOICE recycled underlay is the quiet achiever. Underlay is a very important consideration when it comes to choosing carpet for the home. Not only does it extend the life of your carpet, it also ensures your carpet retains its appearance over the years and provides extra softness underfoot.

Dunlop Flooring is Australia’s largest foam manufacturer and for decades have committed to reducing the impact on the environment by helping reduce landfill. All Dunlop underlays are 100% recyclable and use 90% recycled materials which means that discarded foam underlay previously used together with off-cuts and trims are cleaned, sorted and ultimately recycled into new reusable underlay.

So, when you choose a Dunlop underlay know that you are assisting in leaving a lighter footprint in the environment.

Plantino Landmark Reforestation

Plantino Native Landmark timber flooring is another product with a great story behind it.

Manufactured by Complete Floors (AU) Hurford Hardwood (NZ), the company is committed to hardwood reforestation whereby they have over 5,000 hectares of land that produces over 25,000 new plantation eucalypt sapling each year.

With a 25 year plan in place to ensure that ongoing sustainable harvesting is maintained to keep up with the demand of their product, their aim is to sustain the full range of commercial and conservation values of the natural forest diversity, including protecting soil and water sources as well as including the planting of non-harvested mixed tree species to provide additional corridors of native forest.

Their sustainable forest management will only benefit current and future generations whilst also offering homeowners an ecological choice of hard flooring. Check out Plantino Native Landmark at your local Choices Flooring store.

RecoFloor Scheme

Genero Design luxury vinyl is 100% recyclable and recycled. Co-founded and funded by Polyflor, the RecoFloorTM program actively seeks to recover and recycle used vinyl flooring to minimise the amount of flooring going onto landfill. The vinyl is then made into other practical items such as traffic cones and road barrier bases.

Since 2010 Polyflor Australia and New Zealand have recycled 112 tonnes. Polyflor globally has recycled 2,660 tonnes since 2009. This volume is equal to enough vinyl flooring waste to cover 122 football pitches. And saved over 2,000 tonnes of CO² which equates to driving 48 times round the equator or taking 100 cars off the road for a year.
